Prior to being able to update from XMS Edge version 2.15 to any version above, Advanced Vector Extensions (AVX) support is mandatory to be activated on the cluster that runs XMS Edge version 2.15 already. Specifically AVX1 or AVX2 are required. Systems with CPUs that do not have AVX support enabled have the risk to result in an unreachable state after the update to any higher version.
For any other requirements related to XMS Edge, see KB 3628.
XMS Edge 2.17 is a mandatory security version what means it will not be possible to downgrade once updated.
The correct steps to enable and update to the XMS EDGE to any version above 2.15 is as following:
-
Make a backup of your XMS Edge version 2.15 and your Virtual Machine.
First set your Edge in OFFLINE MODE, log in with credentials shown in XMS Cloud
Secondly, click on Collaboration Management (bottom left)
Thirdly, go to Personalization, Configuration files, where the Backup Button is located. -
Enable AVX for the cluster used by XMS Edge.
If your configuration supports AVX and how to set this is VM cluster specific and best is to consult the technical documentation related to this. -
Confirm AVX is enabled on Host and VM, now you can install the new XMS Edge version 2.17.
-
After the update If you encounter an error such as the XMS Edge not coming online, follow the troubleshooting steps mentioned in KB 15231 to bring XMS Edge back to the previous version.
-
Take the new XMS Edge 2.17 in offline mode.
-
Restore the backup made on XMS Edge version 2.15.
-
Bring the XMS Edge 2.17 back online.
-
Remove the XMS Edge 2.15 from the XMS Cloud
When you already tried to update to a new 2.16 and it failed with the XMS Virtual Edge is stuck in offline state you can recover following the troubleshooting steps mentioned in KB 15231, if this fails or you did not take a backup the only alternative is to install a new VM and manually configure the XMS edge and base units.
