Why are there black borders on my ClickShare when sharing?

Applicable to

By default, all ClickShare Base Units will send out an image in the 16:9 aspect ratio. Depending on the aspect ratio sent out by the device you are sharing content from this could result in black borders.

  • On Windows, the default resolution is also in the 16:9 aspect ratio. Microsoft Surface devices are configured in a 3:2 aspect ratio. To change this, change the screen resolution via a right-click on the Desktop and select Screen resolution. Set the resolution to 1920x1080.
  • On macOS, on the other hand, the default resolutions are by default in a 16:10 or 4:3 aspect ratio. For this reason, the content will be scaled to 16:9, causing black borders to appear on the top and bottom (16:10) or on the left and right (4:3). Read more on how you can prevent or limit this.

Limiting black borders when sharing from macOS

You can limit black borders when sharing from a macOS device by using a 16:9 resolution. This can be done by going to System Preferences > Displays.

By default, the resolution will be set to "Default for display". Hold the Alt button on the keyboard and meanwhile click the "Scaled" option. You will see that an expanded list of resolutions will appear. Select any 16:9 resolution (for example: 1440 x 810). A Retina display will not give you the screen below.  To get a 16:9 display on a MAC with a retina display, for no black bars you will need to attach an external monitor and set that resolution to 16:9

Black status bar on the ClickShare CX/C/CB models

On the ClickShare CX/C/CB models, a wallpaper with a status bar is present, featuring a visible bottom bar. Due to this the content presented on the screen is scaled and might contain black borders.

The black status bar at the bottom has been deliberately put in place to:

  • Improve your meeting behavior by indicating the time - stay on topic and wrap up when required.
  • Indicate the capabilities and status of the room - a camera and microphone icon indicate in the bottom left if the room is conferencing enabled and whether the peripherals are in use.
  • Show you important information when needed - the pin code and pairing information are shown instead of the ClickShare brand when an event is happening
  • Enable you to take full control of annotation and touchback - enable/disable touchback in the bottom right to avoid accidental touches and select your annotation tools when required.>

Note: The black status bar on the wallpaper for these ClickShare devices cannot be removed. However, you can hide the black status bar while sharing content by enabling Theater Mode in their ClickShare Configurator (how-to, see: KB 3297).
