Context
Rooted in the cultural legacy of “Memorial to Yueyang Tower”, “Ascending Yueyang Tower” is directed by acclaimed filmmaker Li Yan and his team. Centered on the spiritual theme of “shared sorrow and joy”, the production blends four theatrical spaces with three digital poetic sceneries to create a deeply immersive experience.
By integrating cutting-edge multimedia technologies like 3D mapping and naked-eye holographic projection, the project reimagines ancient structures as living digital canvases. These techniques enable the “Revival” of historical artifacts and figures, transporting audiences into vivid scenes from Fan Zhongyan’s literary world.
Challenge
As a nationally protected cultural relic and a key 5A scenic site, Yueyang Tower’s historic structure prohibits any direct equipment installation. The projection system had to be independently mounted to ensure zero contact with the ancient architecture, preserving the integrity of the heritage site.
Under these stringent conditions, the director’s team conducted extensive testing of brightness, contrast, saturation, color accuracy, and resolution. Through meticulous planning and design, they achieved the final visual presentation that was both precise and flawless.
Solution
In collaboration with system integrator Mingdian Chuangshi, Barco oversaw the full implementation of the projection system. Together, we successfully merged visual content with the physical space, building poetic realms across the two major theaters. This breathed new life into traditional culture and reimagined a national landmark through the lens of cutting-edge projection technology.
- “Wine in the Wind” Theater:
In the Qixing Stele Corridor, Barco projectors bring vivid holographic imagery to life, portraying Fan Zhongyan’s search for creative inspiration. Surrounded by a breathtaking immersive environment of sky, earth, and stars, audiences experience a transcendent dialogue between Fan and the great poets of the past across time and space.
- “To Whom Do I Belong” Theater:
Beneath the main tower of Yueyang, Barco projectors cast an expansive ink-style scroll onto the building’s façade through 3D mapping, while the shimmering waves of Dongting Lake ripple across the ground. The seamless fusion of architectural and floor projections envelops the entire space in a luminous tapestry of light.
- “Five Dynasties Tower View”:
3D mapping and naked-eye holographic projections rejuvenate the façades of the Yuan, Ming, and Qing-dynasty towers, allowing guests to witness Yueyang Tower’s evolution through time.
