Barco’s carbon reduction target formally approved by Science Based Targets initiative

Kortrijk, Belgium, 26 March 2021 – Barco, a world leader in visualization and collaboration solutions, is proud to announce that its carbon reduction target has been approved by the Science Based Target initiative. It is declared as consistent with levels required to keep global warming to below 1.5°C – the most ambitious goal of the Paris Agreement by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This is an external confirmation of the ambitious trajectory Barco has embarked upon in 2016, which we will continue with equal perseverance in the years to come.

science based targetsThe Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), which defines and promotes best practices in science-based target setting, and independently assesses companies’ targets. Barco has first defined its targets in 2016, with goals to be achieved by 2020. After successfully reaching these milestones , Barco decided to raise the bar and aim for a carbon reduction target that is science-based and supports the goal to limit global warming to 1.5°C.

The target, submitted by Barco late 2020 and now formally approved by SBTi, is to reduce absolute scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas emissions 45% by 2025 from a 2015 base year.

With this target we cover both the carbon emissions of our own operations (15% of the total) and the use of our products and solutions (amounting to 85%). The coming years, the focus points for sustainability will be:

  • Improving our infrastructure footprint by investing in energy efficient building and using renewable energy
  • Improving our logistics footprint by enhancing modal shift from air to sea
  • Improving the footprint of products & solutions, mainly by using laser as a light source

“With the approval of the SBTi, we are proud to join the ambitious group of companies who follow a science-based trajectory to tackling climate change. “says Jan De Witte, CEO of Barco. “It is our responsibility as an industry to limit our emissions and to work together with all partners in our supply chain to jointly fight climate change.”
