GAIL Noida: powering India's gas pipeline control room with Barco laser video walls

Noida, India · 2026

GAIL (India) Limited is India's leading natural gas company, with operations spanning trading, transmission, LPG production and transmission, LNG re-gasification, petrochemicals, and city gas distribution. To keep India's vast network of natural gas and LPG cross-country pipelines running safely and efficiently, GAIL relies on a centralized SCADA system operated from its National Gas Management Center (NGMC) in Noida. This control room is the nerve center for monitoring and operating pipeline infrastructure across the country, and it has trusted Barco's display technology since 2003.

Barco solutions

  • RGB Laser ODL-721 rear-projection video wall in 10x3 matrix
  • NSD-430 video wall controller

Key benefits

  • Twice the brightness of the previous LED wall, keeping visuals sharp even in daylight
  • Redundant controllers with automatic failover for uninterrupted 24/7 operation
  • Laser light source rated for roughly 11 years of continuous use
  • A trusted partnership since 2003, backed by over 10 years without a single product failure

Challenge

  • GAIL's existing video wall – a 16x3 matrix of 50" Barco OVL-515 LED-based rear projection cubes – was reaching the end of its useful life
  • Operators needed a reliable display solution to support continuous, 24/7 monitoring of critical pipeline infrastructure
  • Any downtime or visual quality issues in the control room could mean slower fault detection across India's gas and telecom backbone
  • GAIL wanted next-generation display technology, while also responsibly retiring its older equipment

Solution

  • Barco installed a new RGB laser rear-projection video wall, configured as a 10x3 matrix of 70" ODL-721 cubes
  • The wall is driven by Barco's NSD 430 video wall controller, deployed in redundant mode for maximum uptime
  • Laser light sources deliver twice the brightness of the previous LED-based wall, so images stay sharp even under daylight conditions
  • Automatic calibration keeps colors accurate and consistent across the entire wall, with no manual intervention needed
  • Built-in redundancy across power supplies, inputs, and laser drivers means the system keeps running even if individual components fail
  • Barco's CMS software lets operators organize and share content easily, supporting collaboration across GAIL's sites
  • Barco managed the buy-back of the old display wall, giving GAIL a smooth, hassle-free upgrade path

Results

  • A more reliable control room: redundant controllers eliminate any single point of failure, with automatic failover keeping screens live at all times
  • Faster decision-making thanks to a sharper, more vibrant display that's easier on operators' eyes during long shifts
  • Better situational awareness across GAIL's pipeline and telecom infrastructure, supporting quicker fault resolution
  • A long-lasting investment: the laser light source is rated for over 125,000 hours, equivalent to roughly 11 years of continuous 24/7 use
  • Confidence built on a strong track record: Barco's previous solution ran for over a decade without a single product failure
  • A future-proof setup that keeps GAIL's most critical control room running smoothly, day and night

This video wall is not just a control room tool. It is our commitment to delivering uninterrupted energy and communication services to our customers.
