Illuminating culture through projection mapping at Ithra
Saudi Arabia · 2025
When architecture becomes a canvas and technology becomes the brush, the result is nothing short of breathtaking. At the heart of Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture - better known as Ithra - has redefined how stories are told in public spaces. By harnessing the power of large-scale projection mapping, Ithra has transformed its iconic architecture into a cultural experience that immerses, inspires, and ignites curiosity. Here’s how Barco’s cutting-edge projection technology helped turn this bold vision into a luminous reality.
Context
The King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture, known as Ithra (Arabic for “enrichment”), is a premier cultural landmark and an iconic feature on the Dhahran skyline. Established by Saudi Aramco and inaugurated in 2018, Ithra serves as a hub for cultural exchange, creativity and knowledge by providing a platform for learning and cultural engagement. The 18-storey tower structure features a diverse array of facilities, including a museum, library, cinema, and performance arts theatre and exhibition halls. All of this has earned Ithra a place in Time magazine’s world’s top 100 places to visit.
In an extraordinary blend of technology and culture, Martin Professional Middle East in partnership with Come and Do, delivered a landmark projection mapping installation at the Ithra, transforming the unique architecture into an immersive storytelling platform.
Challenge
Ithra’s vision demanded a projection solution capable of meeting several complex and high-performance requirements. First and foremost, the system needed to deliver exceptional image quality to faithfully represent the intricate cultural narratives being showcased. Given the region’s environmental conditions, the technology also had to offer high reliability and durability to ensure consistent performance over time. Adding to the challenge was the building’s unique architectural design—its curved and textured surfaces required precise calibration and synchronization to achieve a flawless visual experience.
Solution
With a vision to transform architecture into an immersive storytelling platform, the project utilized fifty-five Barco UDX-4K projectors, turning Ithra’s iconic façade into a living narrative with colorful motion graphics and cultural content. The laser projectors, known for their exceptional image clarity, color accuracy and rugged design, perfectly suited the large outdoor surface and complex setup. The robust projection setup enabled vivid, high-impact visuals that added depth and dynamism to the Ithra building.
The projection system was meticulously calibrated to ensure pixel-perfect alignment across the structure’s unique contours. The result was a seamless, unified visual experience that brought cultural stories to life through motion graphics, historical imagery, and artistic animations.
