4K projection mapping onto Villa Medici facade
Rome, IT - 2016
The famous Villa Medici in Rome, Italy, has been home to the French Academy for 350 years. Founded by Louis XIV in 1666, it has welcomed generations of artists and scholars. To celebrate the past 350 years of ‘culture’, the French Academy organized a huge celebration weekend in February 2016. Amongst the many activities: a magical projection mapping onto the internal facade of the villa, telling the (hi)story of the French Academy, which was attended by no fewer than 6,000 people.
Allumeurs d’images
To ensure the most impressive projection possible, the event organizers called in the help of projection mapping experts “Spectaculaires, the ‘allumeurs d’images’”. “Our know-how and graphical proposal won them over,” says Spectaculaires’ Thierry Colleu, engineering manager. Thierry and his team decided to use one of Barco’s brand-new high-brightness HDQ4K-35 projectors at the left and right of the building (portrait mode) and two HDX-W18 FLEX projectors to display the images in the middle.
Introducing the HDQ4K-35
Thanks to its 4K (4,096 x 2,160) resolution, 60 Hz frame rate, Xenon 6.5kW lamp and high-contrast optical engine, the HDQ-4K35 delivers razor-sharp images to boost live events with stunning visuals in vibrant, rich colors. For Spectaculaires the event in Rome marked the first time that they had used Barco’s 4K projector: “The facade of Villa Medici is decorated with beautiful frescoes and the audience stood really close to the building. So we had to use very high-resolution projectors that would deliver sharp images,” Thierry explains. “The 4K projectors were perfectly up to the job.”
