Context

Loyola Marymount University stands for a dynamic fusion of tradition and innovation, a synergy that ignites minds and spirits to create a brighter future. This year, as LMU celebrated the 50th anniversary of the merger between Loyola University and Marymount College, the university embarked on an ambitious project to commemorate this significant milestone. The result was “Anima Mundi: The Soul of the World,” a breathtaking multimedia and multisensory presentation, held against the backdrop of the Sacred Heart Chapel, the spiritual center of the campus. The event was not only a celebration of the past but also a showcase of the innovative future that LMU continually strives to build.

Challenges

Creating “Anima Mundi: The Soul of the World” was no small feat. This live multimedia show needed to encapsulate and honor the rich heritage and mission of LMU, grounded in the goals and wisdom of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange, and the Society of Jesus – the three religious communities who originally joined forces in 1973 to form the educational institution. The challenge was to transform the Sacred Heart Chapel into a vibrant canvas that could convey the multi-faith show through a blend of 2D and 3D animation, high-definition video mapping projection and a live choir performance.

Solution

To achieve this ambitious vision, the University turned to Don’t Wonder Productions who brought in eight Barco UDX-4K40 for the projection needs. With a long history of building reliable and high-quality products, the Barco brand is the preferred partner-in-crime for the production company when it comes to these crucial events. The compact and high-brightness laser projectors offered flexible brightness and resolution settings, ensuring a perfect fit for the varied demands of the multimedia show.

The real game-changer in this project, however, is the Barco Pulse technology. With superior embedded warping capabilities, the projection software was a great aid to align the projections perfectly on the chapel's intricate surfaces with minimal latency and maximum ease-of-use. Combined with the evenness of color across the multi-channel installation, the Barco projectors ensured a seamless visual experience.

Results

Through live performances and the use of cutting-edge technology, the University was able to deliver a deeply immersive and emotionally resonant experience for the audience. "LMU was extremely happy with how Barco projectors brought the beautiful art to life,” remarks Andrew Poley, owner of Don’t Wonder Productions. “With a long history of building reliable and high-quality products, the Barco brand is the preferred trusted collaborator for the production company when it comes to these crucial events."
